A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the week of April 21 through 27, 2002, as 2 "Pennsylvania One Call System Week." 3 WHEREAS, As excavators and contractors work to keep pace with 4 this Commonwealth's ongoing economic development, it is 5 important to minimize damage to underground utility lines, 6 danger to workers and threat of environmental pollution; and 7 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania One Call, Inc., a utility service 8 information center, is key to preventing injuries and damage 9 when digging; and 10 WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania One Call System provides easy, one- 11 call notification about construction and excavation projects 12 that may endanger workers and jeopardize utility lines while 13 also promoting public safety, reducing underground utility 14 damages, minimizing utility service interruptions and protecting 15 the environment; and 16 WHEREAS, The One Call System began with only six utility 17 companies in Western Pennsylvania and the City of Pittsburgh;
1 and 2 WHEREAS, The General Assembly, recognizing the value of this 3 program, enacted Act 287 of 1974 to require this service in all 4 counties within this Commonwealth; and 5 WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania One Call System now serves more 6 than 70,000 members and more than 2,000 local government, 7 authority and utility company members in this Commonwealth; and 8 WHEREAS, Each year the Pennsylvania One Call System in this 9 Commonwealth transmits more than 4.8 million notifications, 10 providing protection to utility companies, their employees and 11 customers; therefore be it 12 RESOLVED, That in recognition of the invaluable service that 13 the Pennsylvania One Call System provides, the Senate designate 14 the week of April 21 through 27, 2002, as "Pennsylvania One Call 15 System Week" and encourage all Pennsylvanians to call 1-800-242- 16 1776 not less than three days before excavation or demolition 17 work to avoid injury, protect our environment and prevent 18 millions of dollars in damages.
