| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing the Watson Institute for its work with children with |
2 | autism and as one of Pennsylvania's regional autism centers. |
3 | WHEREAS, The Watson Institute was founded in 1917 by Mr. and |
4 | Mrs. David Thompson Watson and was known as the D.T. Watson Home |
5 | for Crippled Children; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Throughout its 92-year history, the Watson Institute |
7 | has been a refuge to those crippled by polio, served as a |
8 | research laboratory for Dr. Salk's vaccine, has been hailed as a |
9 | premier training resource for physical therapists and has |
10 | provided high-quality rehabilitation to both children and |
11 | adults; and |
12 | WHEREAS, The Watson Institute, through its family of schools |
13 | and services, helps children and youth between three and 21 |
14 | years of age who have special needs achieve their fullest |
15 | potential in all aspects of their lives; and |
16 | WHEREAS, The Watson Institute has become a member of |
17 | Pennsylvania's approved private schools, providing education to |

1 | children with autism spectrum disorders, neurological |
2 | impairments or serious emotional challenges; and |
3 | WHEREAS, The Watson Institute is involved in the creation of |
4 | an instruction manual that could be used by communities across |
5 | this Commonwealth to develop inclusive summer camp programs for |
6 | children with autism; and |
7 | WHEREAS, The Watson Institute's manual will include best- |
8 | practice approaches that have been used at Watson Institute |
9 | Summer Programs since 2000 and that have improved as the field |
10 | of study has increased knowledge of working with children with |
11 | autism; and |
12 | WHEREAS, The Watson Institute has developed a program to |
13 | support students with autism in college, known as the College |
14 | Autism/Asperger Matriculate Program for Undergraduate Students, |
15 | which is designed to provide ongoing support during the academic |
16 | year to individuals with an autism spectrum disorder who have |
17 | been admitted to college; and |
18 | WHEREAS, The Department of Public Welfare recently named the |
19 | Watson Institute one of the western region's organizations |
20 | comprising the Autism Service, Education, Research and Training |
21 | Center; therefore be it |
22 | RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the Watson Institute for |
23 | its outstanding work with individuals with autism and as one of |
24 | Pennsylvania's regional autism centers. |
