A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of November 2000 as "Pennsylvania Epilepsy 2 Awareness Month." 3 WHEREAS, Epilepsy is the third most common neurological 4 disorder, affecting 2.3 million Americans; and 5 WHEREAS, Approximately 181,000 new cases of seizure and 6 epilepsy are diagnosed each year; and 7 WHEREAS, Nearly 70% of epilepsy cases have causes that are 8 unknown; and 9 WHEREAS, Nearly 120,000 Pennsylvanians are affected by 10 epilepsy, with a growing number of young children and senior 11 citizens diagnosed every year according to the Epilepsy 12 Foundations of Western Pennsylvania, Southeastern Pennsylvania 13 and Central Pennsylvania; and 14 WHEREAS, The hidden signs of childhood epilepsy are a serious 15 problem nationwide given children's difficulty in clearly 16 communicating their symptoms; and
1 WHEREAS, Recognizing these hidden signs is important in the 2 early diagnosis and treatment of children to prevent the onset 3 of learning disabilities, social problems and safety risks 4 associated with epilepsy; and 5 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's Epilepsy Foundations in conjunction 6 with the National Epilepsy Foundation are conducting an 7 extensive outreach program to educate parents, day-care workers 8 and other caregivers on the often hidden symptoms of childhood 9 epilepsy; and 10 WHEREAS, The National Epilepsy Foundation is launching the 11 "Kids and Seizures: Know the Hidden Signs" campaign during 12 "National Epilepsy Month," November 2000; therefore be it 13 RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of November 14 2000 as "Pennsylvania Epilepsy Awareness Month" to bring further 15 attention to epilepsy and recognize Pennsylvanians affected by 16 epilepsy and their caregivers and advocates for their courage 17 and commitment; and be it further 18 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to 19 the Epilepsy Foundations of Western Pennsylvania, Southeastern 20 Pennsylvania and Central Pennsylvania.
