A RESOLUTION
1Designating February 14, 2014, as "Harrisburg Area Community
2College Day" in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the
3community college.
4WHEREAS, Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) was
5established on February 14, 1964, as the first community college
6in Pennsylvania; and
7WHEREAS, HACC is the largest and oldest of Pennsylvania's 14
8community colleges; and
9WHEREAS, HACC serves the central Pennsylvania region through
10campuses in Gettysburg, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon, York and
11additional off-site learning locations and offers a robust
12virtual learning environment; and
13WHEREAS, HACC opened its doors to 426 students in its first
14year, it currently enrolls more than 20,000 students each
15semester and has a network of more than 50,000 alumni; and
16WHEREAS, Over the past 50 years, more than 287,000 credit
17students have taken courses at HACC and more than 380,000
1students have received training and instruction in noncredit
2programs; and
3WHEREAS, HACC offers career associate and transfer degree
4programs, diplomas and certificate programs and workforce
5development programs in health care, computer training, fire
6training, law enforcement and safety, security and technology
7and trades; and
8WHEREAS, HACC's mission is to "create opportunities and
9transform lives to shape the future – together"; and
10WHEREAS, HACC's mission reflects its strong commitment to
11meeting the needs of local communities and students through the
12dedication and service of its high-quality faculty and staff;
13and
14WHEREAS, With the leadership of the board of trustees and
15under the direction of Board Chairman, Timothy Sandoe, and
16college President, Dr. John J. "Ski" Sygielski, HACC is
17committed to being the first choice for an accessible and
18affordable higher education opportunity; and
19WHEREAS, HACC provides scholarship programs through the HACC
20Foundation, which was established in 1985 to raise private and
21corporate revenues to support the college and its students; and
22WHEREAS, The HACC Foundation contributed approximately $2.2
23million in scholarships, special programs and facilities, and
24provided financial assistance to 1,345 students in the 2012–2013
25academic school year; and
26WHEREAS, On February 13, 2014, HACC will begin its 50th
27anniversary and invite residents to fully participate and enjoy
28the many academic and cultural events planned through the year
29at each of its campuses; therefore be it
30RESOLVED, That the Senate designate February 14, 2014, as
1"Harrisburg Area Community College Day" in commemoration of the
250th anniversary of the community college.
