A RESOLUTION

Mourning the loss of the Honorable Frank J. Montemuro, Jr., who

2

died on March 29, 2012, in Newtown, Bucks County, at 86 years

3

of age.

4

WHEREAS, The Senate of Pennsylvania mourns the loss of

5

Justice Montemuro, noted trial court and appellate court jurist

6

in this Commonwealth; and

7

WHEREAS, Justice Montemuro was a retired Senior Justice of

8

the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and Senior Judge of the

9

Pennsylvania Superior Court and a former judge and

10

administrative judge of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas;

11

and

12

WHEREAS, A United States Navy veteran of World War II,

13

Justice Montemuro served our nation with honor and distinction

14

from 1944 to 1946; and

15

WHEREAS, Justice Montemuro graduated from Temple University

16

and earned a law degree from Duke University; and

17

WHEREAS, Justice Montemuro began his judicial career when

18

appointed as a judge of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas

in 1964, and he was elected to a ten-year term the following

2

year; and

3

WHEREAS, After consolidation of the Philadelphia courts in

4

1968, Justice Montemuro was named administrative judge of the

5

Philadelphia Family Court; and

6

WHEREAS, Justice Montemuro was appointed to the Pennsylvania

7

Superior Court in 1980; and

8

WHEREAS, Justice Montemuro began an interim appointment to

9

the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in 1992 and was later sworn in as

10

Senior Justice; and

11

WHEREAS, Justice Montemuro completed his judicial career as

12

Senior Judge of the Superior Court, retiring at 80 years of age;

13

and

14

WHEREAS, To his great credit, Justice Montemuro was the first

15

Chairman of the Philadelphia Regional Planning Council's Law

16

Enforcement Assistance Administration and served a four-year

17

term as a member of the Pennsylvania Judicial Inquiry and Review

18

Board; and

19

WHEREAS, Justice Montemuro was a member of the board of

20

Catholic Charities for the Philadelphia Archdiocese, trustee of

21

the Community College of Philadelphia and former national

22

President of the Supreme Lodge of the Order Sons of Italy in

23

America; and

24

WHEREAS, In recognition of his exceptional service, Justice

25

Montemuro received numerous awards and accolades, including the

26

Humanitarian Award from the Justice Lodge of B'nai B'rith and

27

the Pioneer Award from Frankford High School; and

28

WHEREAS, Pope John Paul II named Justice Montemuro a Knight

29

Commander of the Order of Saint Gregory the Great; and

30

WHEREAS, Justice Montemuro was named a Commendatore of the

Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and was later named a

2

Grande Ufficiale of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic;

therefore be it

4

RESOLVED, That the Senate note with great sadness the passing

5

of the Honorable Frank J. Montemuro, Jr., whose life greatly

6

enriched all who lived, served and worked with him, and extend

7

heartfelt condolences to his wife, Margaret Gigliotti Montemuro;

8

sons, Frank J. III, Michael C. and Anthony; six grandchildren;

9

and other family members and friends; and be it further

10

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to

11

Mrs. Margaret Gigliotti Montemuro, Newtown, PA 18940.
