A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of April 2016 as "Jazz Appreciation Month"
in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, "Jazz Appreciation Month," known as JAM, was created
in 2002 at the Smithsonian Museum to herald and celebrate the
extraordinary heritage and history of jazz in the month of
April; and
WHEREAS, JAM is intended to stimulate and encourage people of
all ages to participate in jazz through study, concerts,
recordings and books; and
WHEREAS, This year, JAM is exploring how jazz is a form of
democracy because it serves as a means of communication and as
an equalizer; and
WHEREAS, This year, JAM is celebrating the legacy of musician
and bandleader Benny Carter; and
WHEREAS, Benny Carter was an African-American musician who
made major contributions to the development of jazz, including
defining the role of the alto saxophone and breaking down
boundaries throughout the music and entertainment industries;

WHEREAS, JAM promotes appreciation of the joys, power and
glories of jazz; and
WHEREAS, Jazz is a vital part of American culture and has
been a gift to the world; and
WHEREAS, Jazz is a part of the rich and diverse musical
background of this Commonwealth; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of April 2016
as "Jazz Appreciation Month" in Pennsylvania and recognize the
accomplishments of this year's featured jazz artist, Benny
Carter.
