A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of September 2008 as "Prostate Cancer 2 Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer 4 diagnosed among men in this Commonwealth, afflicting 9,435 men 5 in 2005, and is the second leading cause of cancer death among 6 men in this Commonwealth, causing 1,485 deaths in 2005; and 7 WHEREAS, Department of Health reports show that each year 8 from 1995 through 2005, on average, there were 9,949 new 9 prostate cancer cases diagnosed among men in this Commonwealth 10 and 1,684 men in this Commonwealth died from the disease; and 11 WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that 186,320 12 men in the United States will be diagnosed with prostate cancer 13 during 2008 and 28,660 men will die of this disease, which is 14 the second leading cause of cancer death among men in the United 15 States; and 16 WHEREAS, The risk of developing prostate cancer increases as
1 a man ages, as evidenced by the fact that more than 65% of all 2 prostate cancers are diagnosed in men over 65 years of age; and 3 WHEREAS, Prostate cancer is twice as common among African- 4 American men; and 5 WHEREAS, Early detection and screening for prostate cancer 6 are vital to combating the disease, especially for all men over 7 50 years of age, African-American men and men with a family 8 history of prostate cancer; and 9 WHEREAS, With early detection, the five-year relative 10 survival rate for men with localized prostate cancer is 100%; 11 and 12 WHEREAS, Greater public awareness and education about 13 prostate cancer are necessary to help protect the health and 14 welfare of men; therefore be it 15 RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of September 16 2008 as "Prostate Cancer Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania and 17 encourage all men to educate themselves about the risk of 18 prostate cancer.
